LPG Shortage in India Fuels Misinformation Over ‘Water-Filled’ Cylinders
Amid an ongoing LPG shortage across India, viral videos showing liquid being poured from gas cylinders have sparked confusion and allegations of fraud. Clips from local agencies, including one in Jaipur, show customers weighing cylinders at 22–26 kg and releasing liquid, leading many to believe they were filled with water instead of gas.
However, experts clarify that LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) is naturally stored in liquid form under pressure inside cylinders. When a cylinder is inverted or opened in a certain way, this liquid can flow out—making it appear like water, even though it is normal behavior.
The larger concern remains the supply disruption linked to geopolitical tensions near the Strait of Hormuz, particularly involving Iran and Israel. Reduced imports since early March 2026 have led to rationing, hoarding, and reports of black-market activity.
In some cases, safety risks have also emerged. A recent incident in Rajkot saw two LPG cylinders explode, injuring residents and raising further concerns over handling and storage during the shortage.
Authorities and experts are urging the public not to fall for misleading visuals and to rely on verified information, while also calling for stricter monitoring to manage supply and ensure safety.
